Texas Women’s University Towers

Allana Buick & Bers, Inc. (ABB), was retained by Texas Women’s University to provide forensic investigation, water infiltration testing, design development, construction documents, and construction administration for Stark Hall and Guinn Hall located in Denton, Texas.

ABB faced several challenges with both buildings – Stark Hall and Guinn Hall (21 & 24 stories respectively). Both were each constructed at different times with different systems and were not well maintained. Limited remedial funding was available for the project.

ABB evaluated and provided forensic condition assessments and remedial design for the exterior weathering required to restore watertight integrity on two of the signature tower buildings on the TWU campus. The work included determination of defects and non-performing conditions and development of remedial design approaches to address each building’s unique needs. ABB worked through the University design and review process including development and refinement of construction cost estimates. Repair issues included various sealants, window glazing/wet seal, masonry repairs, mortar repointing, and establishing minimum product performance and installation procedures.

ABB administered design and construction phase for concurrent remedial action on the two buildings as one project with one contractor.
