Water Intrusion Testing of Curtain Wall
ABBAE has worked with many waterproofing, roofing, window, door, and curtain wall manufacturers; testing their products utilizing ASTM and AAMA protocols. Our review of assemblies includes disassembling components and systems to understand modes of failure and improve assembly methodology, chemical composition, and assess component performance.
In cases where we see paint peeling, blistering, or fading, ABBAE uses ASTM D4138 to conduct analysis of the coatings to resolve coating failures. ASTM D4138 is the standard practice for measurement of dry film thickness or protective coating systems by destructive cross-sectioning means. ABBAE uses a Tooke Gauge to measure finish coatings from film down to substrate. This is a destructive test that allows for measurement of each coating layer, and is applicable for most substrates.
To test stucco on an exterior of a building, ABBAE uses ASTM C1583, which is a mock-up test method used with the performance of a pull test. First, stucco is scored and then a device is attached to a small sampling. The device applies pressure to the sampling and then slowly pulls till stucco or coatings are removed. At that time, ABBAE is able to analyze which layer is failing.
Mechanical Systems Testing
ABBAE deploys DynaSonic ultrasonic non-destructive flow meters to measure water consumption. Testing is primarily performed to understand hot water consumption in multi-family applications of solar hot water or central plant modernization.
ABBAE uses small battery operated Onset devices to log temperature and humidity data to better understand space environment conditions over a period of 7 to 30 days. This information can be instrumental in resolving conditions conducive to the propagation of condensation and mold.
Energy Systems Testing
ABBAE operates Dent Power meters for large kWh consumption and Onset Power Meters coupled with data loggers to generate power consumption profiles for entire buildings or individual equipment elements. The data is used to validate savings associated with system and device investments designed to reduce energy usage and capture local utility incentives and rebates.
