2929Hawaii Energy’s ENERGY STAR® Benchmarking Initiative

ABBAE & HE Benchmarking InitiativeABBAE is teaming up with Hawaii Energy, the conservation and efficiency program, to launch their ENERGY STAR® Benchmarking initiative. The goal is to benchmark a mix of commercial, condominium, water and wastewater facilities in Hawaii, Honolulu and Maui counties. The benchmarking process compares your building’s performance to industry best practices. By gathering data on building energy usage and performance, Hawaii Energy and ABBAE are aiming to increase understanding of how the commercial and industrial sectors utilize energy in order to create more tailored and effective incentive programs in the future. Participants in this program may receive targeted financial incentives and rebates for energy efficiency upgrades.

How Does It Work?

  1. A typical benchmarking analysis consists of a simple input of energy, water, gas or utility usage data in our system followed by initial recommendations for energy conservation. Additional services include advising facility managers on ENERGY STAR® documentation and best practices, and reviewing submittals for planning, design and construction. Additional services are beyond the scope of the Benchmarking program.
  2. After the initial analysis, your facility will receive an ENERGY STAR® Rating Number. Based on your score, a portfolio of programs and incentives will be custom-tailored to your specific needs and energy usage profile. Targeted incentives may include: increased financial incentives for energy conservation and efficiency measures, Whole Building Assistance Program, energy audits, design and certification assistance and Decision-Maker Metering.

The Benchmarking Process

  1. Work with facility engineers, managers and owners to perform an initial property benchmarking assessment. The gathered data will be transferred into the ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager, a benchmarking tool for measuring EUI (Energy Use Intensity), greenhouse gas emissions, and an ENERGY STAR® performance score.
  2. Advise personnel on ENERGY STAR® documentation, best practices for maintenance, review submittals throughout the planning, design and construction process.
  3. Assist in any other tasks related to the planning and implementing of the ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager.

Is My Facility Eligible?

Commercial and condominium clients in the Hawaii, Honolulu and Maui counties (single facilities over 5,000 SF or facility portfolios over 10,000 SF) that haven’t been issued an ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager Benchmark Report in the past 2 years can participate.

Why Should I Benchmark My Facility?

  1. Energy costs are steadily increasing, and benchmarking can help building owners reduce costs. Receive ENERGY STAR® selection, verification or certification.
  2. Collected data will create a building profile and identify where your buildings energy usage is excelling and needs improvement.
  3. Your building’s performance metrics can be compared to standard baselines and goals, so you know how well you are doing in comparison to similar buildings.
  4. Maintenance and upgrades can be quickly identified and prioritized for maximum savings potential. You can use the data to make an informed decision about the best measures for reducing costs by identifying annual kWh consumption and cost.
  5. Annual energy usage and expected costs can be reported on to provide valuable information for those interested in leasing or purchasing your building.
