ABBAE Ranked 38 in Silicon Valley’s 50 Fastest-Growing Private Companies


Allana Buick & Bers (ABBAE) was recently listed as one of Silicon Valley’s 50 Fastest-Growing Private Companies. This marks the first year that the 30 year company has been honored. The Architectural Engineering firm which specializes in building enclosure, roofing and exterior façade waterproofing as well as building forensics and energy efficiency consulting found itself among a very diverse group of honorees.

Fellow honorees included: AppLovin, a marketing advertising company, Nutanix, Inc., an enterprise cloud platform computing and storage firm, Level 10 Construction, a commercial general contractor, and Balsam Brands, a holiday décor and Christmas tree retailer.

To be selected, firms had to submit their revenue figures from 2013 to 2015 and those with the highest growth percentage were selected for the Fast Private award. ABBAE hit the list at number 38, topping several IT, computing, digital marketing and contractor firms.

The top-ranking firms were honored at an evening gathering in Campbell, CA on October 21. The highest revenue growth company was AppLovin with a 1,206% growth in revenue over the last three years. ABBAE marked a 43.1% revenue growth over the same time frame. ABBAE expects that given its current business forecast, it will probably move up the list next year.

Silicon Valley’s 50 fastest growing private companies is developed by the Silicon Valley Business Journal and firms are ranked by their revenue growth between 2013 and 2015.

Bentonite HDPE Composite Waterproofing Systems



Sodium bentonite based waterproofing systems have steadily gained in popularity for below-grade application for both blindside and positive side construction. Although bentonite is in many household products, it has become one of the more versatile waterproofing materials available on the market today. Bentonite has many applications that include:

  • Under slab
  • Zero property line (blindside) construction
  • Back-filled walls
  • Earth-covered structures
  • Tunnels
  • Split-slab deck construction
  • Hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic site conditions

There are many manufacturers who offer a variety of bentonite waterproofing systems. Some of these product variations include standard bentonite sheet with a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) waterproofing membrane for repelling water or a multi-layer (bentonite, HDPE, and woven fabric) sheet membrane combination for repelling water and gas. The multi-layer sheet membrane is designed for use with shotcrete and cast-inplace concrete applications.

Fenestrations – Vinyl Windows



Windows are one of the most complex and expensive facets of the building envelope as they can account for approximately 10% of a building’s air inltration according to the U.S. Department of Energy, and can cost up to several thousand dollars per unit. The number, size, material choice and orientation of windows can make or break the energy efficiency of the entire building.

With so much on the line, it is important for windows to be weather and water tight. There are slightly less than 100 different American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) tests and 40 American Architectural Manufacturer’s Association (AAMA) standards, in addition to various other NFRC, ANSI, ASCE, CPSC, NFPA, UL and GANA Standards pertaining solely to windows. One of the most specified glazing products in multi and single family construction is the vinyl window.

Horizontal Above Grade Waterproofing




This paper is limited to protected type waterproofing membrane assemblies such as plaza decks, split slabs and concrete over wood decks assemblies. Traffic able waterproofing membrane systems like deck coatings and traditional protected roof assemblies such as inverted roof membrane assemblies are excluded from this discussion. Plaza decks are defined as exposed pedestrian surfaces constructed over parking or other occupied space, often built over structural concrete.

IBC defines garages as a type of occupancy, so technically plazas built over garages are over occupied space. Plaza decks can have many features such as driveways, pools, lawns, large mature trees, terrazzo and concrete toppings, glass screens, pavers over gravel or pedestals, planters, etc. Also discussed are protected waterproofing membranes over wood decks surfaced with many of the same types of permanent surfaces such as concrete topping slab, tile planters, etc. Typical Type V Podium assemblies are 4 to 5 stories of wood framed construction over a concrete podium, commonly used in California and other states for multi-family construction.

These elevated wood assemblies also have exposed, horizontal waterproofing with hard wearing surfaces like concrete which are integrated to the exterior wall claddings such as, masonry, stucco, siding, dimension stone, etc. Because these assemblies are surfaced with permanent landscape and hardscape features and integrated with doors, ramps and claddings elements, the wood framed waterproofed assemblies are also built with a life expectancy equivalent to the “life of the building”.

July 2015, Palo Alto/Redwood City, CA – The Statewide Educational Wrap-Up Program Joint Powers Authority (SEWUP JPA) has recognized Allana Buick & Bers, Inc. (ABBAE), in conjunction with the San Mateo County Community College District, for their work on The Cañada College Solar Photovoltaic System Project.

The Statewide Educational Wrap-Up Program Joint Powers Authority (SEWUP JPA) is a not-for-profit, Owner Controlled Insurance Program, otherwise known as an OCIP or Wrap Up. Made up of over 500 California Schools and Community College Districts, their Mission is to provide a comprehensive, safety-focused, risk-controlled, cost effective construction insurance program for public education agencies. The SEWUP JPA “Safety Awards” were created in 2008 to stimulate interest in accident prevention and recognize safe work practices.

The Cañada College Solar Photovoltaic System Project

Allana Buick and Bers (ABBAE) was retained by San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD) to design and construct a turnkey solar photovoltaic (PV) system for Cañada College. The project scope covered the design, procurement, project and construction management, and construction of the project, and related operations and maintenance services.

ABBAE’s 1.25 MW DC system was selected to deliver overall highest net financial benefit, maximize the California Solar Initiative rebate, and provide the maximum energy harvest on Cañada College’s 3.5 acre site. A highly efficient panel and inverters were used to maximize output based on a reliable track record of performance.
